SPD launches alternative reporting option for sexual assault survivors

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department (SPD) launched Seek Then Speak, an alternative reporting option to assist sexual assault survivors in gathering information and initiating the reporting process. This resource, developed by Ending Violence Against Women International (EVAWI), enables survivors and their supporters to access vital information about medical care and supportive services. Survivors aged 18 and older can engage in a self-guided interview that educates them on their rights and the purpose of the information requested. After completing the interview, survivors receive a PDF that they can save for personal records or submit to law enforcement if they choose to report. This initiative aims to enhance support for survivors in Spokane while respecting their privacy and comfort.

Seek Then Speak is specifically designed for scenarios that do not necessitate immediate law enforcement intervention. The program emphasizes the importance of providing resources tailored to the needs of survivors in the community. By adopting this innovative reporting option, SPD seeks to foster a more supportive environment for those affected by sexual violence.
