Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff in response to a directive from Governor Bob Ferguson, honoring victims of political violence. This gesture commemorates Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark, who were assassinated on June 14, 2025, as well as Charlie Kirk, who was also killed in a politically motivated attack on September 10, 2025. The City acknowledges the serious injuries sustained by Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in an attempted assassination. “Violence has no place in our democracy,” said Brown, emphasizing the need for unity and compassion. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, promoting a collective moment of remembrance.

Residents are encouraged to lower their flags at home or businesses in solidarity. This action serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by political violence and the community's commitment to peace. Spokane joins the nation in mourning those who have lost their lives due to these acts.
