Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to half-staff to honor victims of political violence, following Governor Bob Ferguson's directive for state and U. S. flags to also be lowered. The tribute specifically remembers Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, both assassinated in June 2025, as well as Charlie Kirk, who was killed in September 2025. Additionally, the community acknowledges Minnesota Sen.
John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who suffered serious injuries in an attempted assassination. Brown stated, “Violence has no place in our democracy,” expressing deep sympathies for those affected. Flags will remain lowered until sunset on September 14, inviting community members to join in the remembrance. The initiative underscores a growing concern over political violence in the nation. This act of mourning reflects Spokane's commitment to support victims and their families.
The lowered flags serve as a poignant reminder of the need for unity and peace in the face of violence.
