Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff in remembrance of victims of political violence. This decision follows a directive from Governor Bob Ferguson, who mandated that state and U. S. flags be lowered at all state agency facilities. The victims honored include Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were assassinated in June 2025, and Charlie Kirk, who was killed in September 2025.
Additionally, the city recognizes Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who survived an attempted assassination. Brown emphasized that "violence has no place in our democracy," extending condolences to those impacted. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, allowing the community to participate in this tribute. Local residents are encouraged to lower their flags as a sign of solidarity against political violence.
This initiative underscores Spokane's commitment to fostering a safe and peaceful democratic environment.
