Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown announced that flags at City facilities will be lowered to half-staff in response to a directive from Governor Bob Ferguson. This gesture honors victims of political violence, notably Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, who were assassinated on June 14, 2025. The City also mourns Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September 10, 2025, and acknowledges Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman, who suffered serious injuries in an assassination attempt. “Violence has no place in our democracy,” Brown said, extending sympathies to the affected families.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, 2025. The mayor's order reflects a broader commitment to addressing political violence in the community. Residents are encouraged to participate by lowering flags at their homes and businesses. This act of remembrance seeks to unite the community in solidarity against political violence.
