Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at City facilities to half-staff to honor victims of political violence, aligning with Governor Bob Ferguson's directive. This tribute recognizes Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, both slain in June 2025, as well as Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated in September 2025. The memory of Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who suffered serious injuries in an attempted assassination, is also honored. Brown emphasized that “Violence has no place in our democracy,” extending the city's condolences to affected families. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, encouraging residents to display their own flags in solidarity.

This action reflects a growing concern over political violence in the U. S. and its impact on democracy. It highlights the need for community support in the face of such tragedies. Spokane joins the nation in mourning those lost to these senseless acts.
