Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to half-staff following Governor Bob Ferguson's directive to honor victims of political violence. This move commemorates the tragic assassinations of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in June 2025, and Charlie Kirk, who was killed in September 2025. In addition, the City honors Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who survived an assassination attempt. Brown stated, “Violence has no place in our democracy,” offering condolences to all affected by these acts. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, encouraging residents to lower their flags in solidarity.

This remembrance highlights the ongoing issue of political violence within the nation. The City of Spokane aims to foster unity and reflection during this difficult time. By participating in this gesture, the community can collectively mourn the loss of innocent lives.
