Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff following a directive from Governor Bob Ferguson. This initiative honors victims of political violence, specifically mentioning the assassinations of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, as well as Charlie Kirk. The city also recognizes Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who suffered serious injuries in an assassination attempt. Brown stated, “Violence has no place in our democracy,” conveying deep sympathies to those impacted.

Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, signaling a period of mourning. Spokane encourages residents to participate by lowering flags at their homes and businesses. This response reflects a growing concern over political violence in the U. S. and aims to foster a sense of community solidarity.

The city’s actions underscore the importance of addressing political extremism and its consequences.
