Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at City facilities to be lowered to half-staff, coinciding with Governor Bob Ferguson’s directive that state and U. S. flags be lowered in honor of victims of political violence. This tribute specifically commemorates Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, assassinated on June 14, 2025, as well as Charlie Kirk, who was killed on September 10, 2025. Additionally, the action recognizes Minnesota Sen.

John Hoffman and his wife, who suffered serious injuries in an assassination attempt. Brown emphasized that “violence has no place in our democracy,” extending condolences to the victims' families and communities. Flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14. Spokane encourages residents and businesses to participate in this memorial by lowering their flags as well. Such actions reflect the city’s commitment to honoring those affected by political violence.

This event underscores the ongoing concern about political safety and the impacts of violence in democratic societies.
