Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown ordered flags at all City facilities to be lowered to half-staff, following Governor Bob Ferguson's directive for state facilities, in honor of victims of political violence. This gesture memorializes those lost, including Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, assassinated on June 14, 2025, and Charlie Kirk, killed on September 10, 2025. Additionally, the City acknowledges Minnesota Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who were seriously injured in an assassination attempt. “Violence has no place in our democracy,” stated Brown, offering condolences to families affected by these tragedies.

Flags will remain lowered until sunset on September 14, 2025, as a sign of respect. The City urges residents to participate by lowering flags at their homes and businesses. This action highlights a growing concern over political violence in the United States, prompting community solidarity. Spokane stands with the nation in mourning those who have fallen victim to such senseless acts.
