Flags at Half-Staff Honoring Victims of Political Violence

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown has ordered flags at all City facilities to half-staff to honor victims of political violence, following a similar directive from Governor Bob Ferguson. This decision commemorates the lives of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were assassinated in June 2025, along with Charlie Kirk, who was killed in September 2025. The City also recognizes Minnesota Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, who sustained serious injuries during an assassination attempt. "Violence has no place in our democracy," remarked Brown, offering sympathies to those impacted by these tragic events. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset on September 14, allowing for a period of mourning.

Citizens are invited to join this initiative by lowering flags at their homes and businesses. Such actions aim to foster community solidarity against political violence. This response underscores the ongoing concern regarding safety and political discourse in the nation.
