Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department emphasizes the importance of safe driving as children return to school. The Traffic Unit will actively enforce speed limits and monitor for distracted driving in school zones. Speeding has proven deadly, with 221 speed-related fatalities recorded in Washington in 2024 alone. Starting Tuesday, school zone photo enforcement cameras will be in operation to deter violations. Children are especially at risk, with survival rates dropping dramatically as vehicle speeds increase.

Parents should remind their children of road safety rules and ensure they wear bright, reflective clothing. Additionally, children riding buses should remove their backpacks while seated for safety. Collaborative efforts are essential to protect children during this critical time.
