Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane Police Department urges drivers to prioritize safety as children return to school, focusing on compliance with speed limits in school zones. Law enforcement will actively monitor speeding, distracted driving, and adherence to bus stop rules, with photo enforcement cameras implemented for additional surveillance. Alarmingly, a national survey revealed that two-thirds of drivers exceed the speed limit in school zones during the critical 30 minutes before and after school. In Washington alone, speed-related crashes resulted in 221 fatalities in 2024, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness. The last five years in Spokane saw over 20 fatal crashes linked to speeding and distracted driving, particularly affecting vulnerable children.

Parents should reinforce road safety rules with their children and ensure they are visible while walking or biking. Proper bus etiquette, such as removing backpacks before sitting, is also encouraged. Community cooperation is vital to keep children safe during the school season.
