Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named
Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, making a significant mark as the first woman to lead the Spokane Fire Department. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, effective October 7, ensuring continuity in leadership. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020 and became Interim Fire Chief at the start of the Brown Administration, officially taking the role in April 2024. Williams has been with the department since June 2020 and previously spent 30 years in various roles in Oregon, including significant leadership positions in Portland Fire and Rescue. In addition to his command experience, Williams has served as a tactical medic and flight paramedic, showcasing his diverse background.
O’Berg praised her career in the fire service, emphasizing the strong community commitment of public servants. Mayor Brown acknowledged O’Berg's impactful leadership during a time of transition and expressed confidence in Williams' capabilities. O’Berg's retirement marks the end of an era for the Spokane Fire Department, while Williams aims to build on the foundation she established.
