Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named
Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, marking a significant leadership change for the Spokane Fire Department. O’Berg has held various roles throughout her 36-year career, including firefighter/paramedic and chief, becoming the first woman to lead the Spokane Fire Department when she took on the role permanently in April 2024. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as the new Fire Chief, effective October 7, ensuring continuity in leadership. Williams has served as Assistant Chief since June 2020 and has three decades of experience in Oregon's fire service, including leadership roles in Portland Fire and Rescue. O’Berg thanked her team and the community, emphasizing the purpose and friendships she gained through her service.
Mayor Brown acknowledged O’Berg’s impact and expressed confidence in Williams’s leadership skills. Williams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead the department and praised O’Berg’s contributions. This transition highlights the ongoing dedication of Spokane’s public servants to the community.
