Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Police emphasize the importance of traffic safety as children return to school, urging drivers to reduce speeds and remain vigilant. The Traffic Unit will actively enforce speed limits and monitor for distracted driving and school bus violations. In 2024, speed-related crashes claimed 221 lives in Washington, with more than 20 fatal accidents in Spokane linked to speeding and distraction in the last five years. Children are especially at risk; a pedestrian hit at 20 mph has a 90% chance of survival, dropping to 50% at 30 mph. Parents should equip children with reflective clothing and reinforce road safety rules.

Additionally, bus riders are advised to remove backpacks when seated, and younger children must use booster seats until they reach 4’9”. The Spokane Police's efforts aim to foster safer environments for children this school year. Community cooperation is essential for ensuring the safety of students.
