Spokane City Council Votes to Extend Protections Against ICE Agents

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane City Council approved the "Safe and Welcome in Spokane" ordinance during Monday night's legislative session, enhancing protections against warrantless immigration searches in designated non-public areas. These areas comprise public rights of way that are not generally accessible to the public or temporarily restricted during special events. Council Member Paul Dillon highlighted the ordinance’s importance in creating a community where everyone feels secure and respected. The new measure builds upon Ordinance C35681, passed in 2018, which limited federal immigration officials' access to city property but excluded public rights of way. The council responded to increased federal immigration enforcement and local safety concerns, especially following recent civil unrest.

Dillon stated the ordinance aims to ensure that non-public areas remain accessible without the fear of unwarranted enforcement actions. This initiative reflects the council's commitment to fostering an environment of trust for all residents.
