Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, marking the end of a distinguished career. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, effective October 7, ensuring continuity in leadership. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020 and became the first woman to lead the department during her tenure. Williams brings 30 years of fire service experience, primarily with Portland Fire and Rescue, and has served as Assistant Chief since June 2020. He is also a tactical medic and a board member of the Washington Fire Chiefs.

O’Berg thanked her colleagues and highlighted the importance of community service in her career. Mayor Brown commended O’Berg's dedication and leadership, stating her impact will be felt for years. Williams expressed honor in succeeding O’Berg and gratitude for the opportunity to lead the department.
