Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

With the return to school, the Spokane Police Department emphasizes the importance of safe driving in school zones. The Traffic Unit will enforce speed limits and monitor for distracted driving, while school zone photo enforcement cameras will be activated. A national survey found that two-thirds of drivers exceed the speed limit in these zones, highlighting a dangerous trend. In 2024 alone, speed-related crashes resulted in 221 fatalities across Washington, with distracted driving accounting for 16 deaths. Spokane has seen over 20 fatal crashes in the last five years linked to speeding and distraction.

Authorities advise parents to remind children about road safety and encourage the use of bright, reflective clothing. Parents should also ensure that children follow bus safety protocols and use appropriate car seats. The Spokane Police Department urges the community to collaborate in safeguarding children as they head back to school.
