Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, with 36 years of experience in various roles. She joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020 and became the first female chief in April 2024. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, effective October 7, ensuring a seamless transition. Williams has served as Assistant Chief since June 2020 and boasts three decades of fire service experience in Oregon, primarily with Portland Fire and Rescue. O’Berg expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve and praised the dedication of the department's members.

Mayor Brown commended O’Berg for her leadership during a significant transition period for the department. Williams expressed honor at leading the department and gratitude for O’Berg's mentorship. His leadership is expected to build on the strong foundation established by O’Berg.
