Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane Police are calling on drivers to be more cautious as children head back to school, focusing on speed reductions in school zones. The Traffic Unit will actively enforce speed limits, monitor for distracted driving, and ensure compliance with bus stop regulations. A national survey indicates that two-thirds of drivers exceed speed limits in school zones during critical times, which has led to increased safety concerns. In 2024, speed-related crashes in Washington resulted in 221 deaths, while distracted driving accounted for 16 fatalities. Spokane has experienced over 20 fatal crashes in the past five years linked to speeding and distracted driving.

School zone photo enforcement cameras will be operational starting Tuesday to bolster safety measures. Parents should remind children about road safety, including wearing bright clothing and using proper seating in vehicles. By working together, the community can ensure the safety of its youngest members during the school year.
