Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named
Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, with Assistant Chief Tom Williams succeeding her on October 7. Mayor Lisa Brown announced the leadership transition, highlighting O’Berg's role as the first female chief of the department since her permanent appointment in April 2024. O’Berg has held various positions throughout her 36-year career, contributing significantly to emergency response and training. In her farewell comments, she thanked the community and department members for their support, stating, “The fire service has given me purpose, lifelong friendships, and the honor of serving something greater than myself. ” Williams, who has served as Assistant Chief since June 2020, has a rich background in fire service, including a 30-year tenure in Oregon.
He also brings tactical medic experience from the Portland Police Bureau. Both O’Berg and Williams emphasized the importance of dedication to public service in their statements. This leadership change marks a significant moment for the Spokane Fire Department, promising continued commitment to community safety.
