Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg announced her retirement, effective October 6, after a remarkable 36-year career in the fire service. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, taking over on October 7, which will ensure a seamless leadership transition. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020, initially serving as Deputy Chief of Operations, and later became the first female chief of the department in April 2024. Williams has extensive experience, having spent 30 years in various roles in Oregon, including significant leadership positions with Portland Fire and Rescue. He also served as a tactical medic and is a graduate of the Fire Service Executive Development Institute.

O’Berg expressed pride in her service and gratitude toward her colleagues and the community. Williams acknowledged O’Berg's contributions and expressed excitement about leading the department. This leadership change marks a significant moment for the Spokane Fire Department as it continues to build on its strong foundation.
