Back to School Traffic Safety

Spokane, WALocal News

As school resumes, Spokane Police Department emphasizes the importance of safe driving in school zones. The Traffic Unit will actively enforce speed limits and monitor for distracted drivers, with photo enforcement cameras set to begin operations on Tuesday. Speeding poses a grave risk; in 2024, 221 fatalities in Washington were linked to speed-related crashes. Spokane has seen over 20 fatal incidents in five years due to speeding and distracted driving. Children are particularly vulnerable, with survival rates dropping significantly at higher speeds.

Parents are encouraged to remind children of road safety rules and ensure they wear reflective clothing. Bus riders should remove backpacks before sitting to ensure proper seating. Community vigilance is crucial to protect children as they return to school.
