Spokane City Council Votes to Extend Protections Against ICE Agents

Spokane, WALocal News

The Spokane City Council approved the "Safe and Welcome in Spokane" ordinance on August 26, 2025, during a Legislative Session aimed at enhancing protections against unwarranted immigration enforcement in non-public areas. This measure specifically targets public rights of way that are not generally accessible to the public, addressing safety concerns raised by residents and employees. Council Member Paul Dillon stated that the ordinance reaffirms the city's commitment to creating a safe and respectful community for all. The initiative responds to increased efforts by federal immigration officials to detain individuals believed to be unlawfully present in the country. Previously, the city enacted Ordinance C35681 in 2018, limiting immigration officials' access to city property, but it did not cover public rights of way.

The council reintroduced this ordinance due to rising concerns about immigration enforcement amid civil unrest. Dillon emphasized the importance of fostering an environment of trust and safety. For further details, residents are encouraged to visit the FAQs on the city's Items of Interest page.
