Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6 after nearly four decades in the fire service, marking the end of her 36-year career. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed current Assistant Chief Tom Williams to take over as Fire Chief effective October 7, ensuring a smooth transition. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020, initially as Deputy Chief of Operations, and became the first female chief in April 2024. Williams has served as Assistant Fire Chief since June 2020 and has a rich background in fire service, with 30 years in Oregon, particularly with Portland Fire and Rescue. O’Berg thanked her colleagues and expressed pride in the department's accomplishments.

Mayor Brown acknowledged O’Berg’s significant contributions during a pivotal time for the department. Williams expressed honor in succeeding O’Berg and commitment to serving the Spokane community. The leadership change comes as the department looks to build on its strong foundation.
