Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6, ending her nearly 40-year fire service career. O’Berg joined the Spokane Fire Department in 2020 and became the first woman to permanently lead the department in April 2024. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, effective October 7, ensuring a seamless leadership transition. Williams has 30 years of fire service experience, including significant roles in Portland, Oregon. In her farewell, O’Berg emphasized the purpose and friendships gained through her service, thanking the community and department members.

Mayor Brown acknowledged O’Berg's impactful leadership during a critical time for the department. Williams expressed honor in succeeding O’Berg and appreciation for the opportunity to serve Spokane. The leadership change marks a pivotal moment for the Spokane Fire Department as it continues to build on its strong foundation.
