Spokane Fire Chief announces retirement, successor named

Spokane Fire Chief Julie O’Berg will retire on October 6, concluding a nearly four-decade career in fire service. Mayor Lisa Brown appointed Assistant Chief Tom Williams as her successor, effective October 7, to facilitate a smooth transition. O’Berg has held numerous roles throughout her 36-year career, including firefighter and paramedic, and became the first woman to lead the Spokane Fire Department permanently in April 2024. Williams, who has been Assistant Chief since June 2020, brings 30 years of experience from various fire service roles in Oregon, primarily with Portland Fire and Rescue. He also served as a tactical medic and a flight paramedic, showcasing his extensive operational expertise.

O’Berg thanked her colleagues and the community, highlighting the importance of public service. Mayor Brown commended O’Berg's leadership during a pivotal time and expressed confidence in Williams' dedication to the department. The leadership change marks a significant moment for the Spokane Fire Department as it continues to build on its established foundation.
