Indoor Pool Renovation Would Increase Access, Provide Swim Lessons

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane's Parks and Recreation Department plans to renovate the indoor pool at Spokane Community College for year-round swimming if the Together Spokane initiative passes in November. This initiative, which includes a Parks levy and a School bond, aims to provide a public facility that serves youth, adults, and seniors. The renovated pool will offer swim lessons, including specialized programs for children with disabilities, and will be the only indoor public pool in the city. Spokane Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Adam Swinyard highlighted the critical need for water safety education, particularly for second graders, to reduce drowning risks in the community.

The project responds to the overwhelming demand for swimming access, with over 100,000 visits reported at outdoor centers this summer alone. Additionally, the pool will promote fitness and mobility for residents, further enhancing community health. Renovating the existing facility is a more economical option compared to building a new indoor aquatics center. The initiative is part of a broader plan to complete over 30 projects aimed at improving community resources.
