Mayor Brown Signs Updated 'Complete Streets' Ordinance into Law
Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown signed an updated “Complete Streets” ordinance into law on August 6, 2025, aimed at enhancing street safety and accessibility for all users. The initiative, spearheaded by Transportation Director Jon Snyder and Councilmembers Kitty Klitzke and Paul Dillon, revises Spokane Municipal Code to align it with state law and incorporates references to the Pedestrian Master Plan and Bicycle Priority Network. This legislation broadens the scope of street projects to include more walking and biking features, ultimately leading to cost savings while updating the city’s transportation network. Mayor Brown affirmed that the Complete Streets initiative serves everyone, regardless of their mode of transport. Councilmember Klitzke expressed gratitude for the collaboration in updating this policy, which addresses mobility concerns raised by citizens.
Councilmember Dillon reinforced that the ordinance represents a commitment to creating a safer, healthier, and more accessible Spokane. The city aims to secure more state grant funding through these legislative updates. This progressive approach to urban planning reflects Spokane's dedication to inclusivity in its transportation infrastructure.
