Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response
Spokane River levels have fallen below 1,000 cubic feet per second, prompting the city to implement Level 2 watering restrictions under a 2022 ordinance. Residents must limit outdoor watering to two days a week and avoid watering between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m.
Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlighted the importance of collective efforts in preserving the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, the region's crucial drinking water source. The Water Wise Spokane program provides free consultations to help residents and businesses manage their water use effectively. Spokane's summer water consumption is four times the national average, raising concerns about sustainability. The ordinance aims to mitigate the drought's impact while fostering responsible water use. Thanks to community participation, the city saved over 45 million gallons of water in 2024.
These measures underscore an ongoing commitment to water conservation amid declining river flows.
