Mayor Brown Pushes for Easier Path to Open Childcare Facilities

Spokane, WALocal News

Mayor Lisa Brown proposed a plan to simplify the siting process for daycare and childcare facilities in Spokane. The proposal seeks to eliminate the costly conditional use permit requirement, allowing childcare centers to operate in all residential and commercial zones. Brown stated that access to affordable childcare is vital for working families, aiming to reduce barriers for providers. Local leaders, including Councilmembers Zack Zappone and Paul Dillon, voiced their support, sharing personal experiences of difficulties in finding childcare. The City Council will review the proposal during the Finance Committee meeting on July 28.

This initiative aligns with Senate Bill 5509, which aims to enhance local childcare access. Colleen Condon, CEO of Lilac City Early Learning Center, noted that removing zoning barriers is crucial for meeting the growing demand for childcare in every neighborhood. The proposal represents a significant step toward building a robust childcare infrastructure to support Spokane's families and economy.
