Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's annual Point-in-Time Count indicates a continued decline in homelessness, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22. Sheltered homelessness decreased from 1,578 to 1,189, thanks to improved coordination that transitions individuals to permanent housing. However, the count noted an increase in unsheltered individuals, from 443 to 617, partly due to targeted outreach efforts. Mayor Lisa Brown highlighted the significance of consistent engagement and navigation towards treatment and housing as effective strategies. The City has successfully closed four encampments, achieving an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals.

Volunteers of America supports these efforts, emphasizing the importance of identifying and assisting those in need. The data also revealed that 43 percent of adults surveyed reported serious mental illness, while 52 percent faced substance use disorders. The City aims to expand shelter capacity based on actual facility utilization to ensure safe accommodations for those seeking shelter.
