Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's latest Point-in-Time Count confirms a decline in homelessness for the second straight year, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22, 2025. The count revealed a drop in sheltered homelessness from 1,578 to 1,189 individuals, aided by improved navigation from emergency shelters to permanent housing, achieving an impressive 40 percent placement success rate. Conversely, the number of unsheltered individuals rose from 443 to 617, a change attributed to a more targeted survey approach. The City of Spokane has focused on expanding shelter capacity, ensuring safe indoor options for those in need. Since the 2025 count, the city has closed four encampments and achieved an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals.
The PIT Count also highlighted critical issues, with 43 percent of adults reporting serious mental illness and 52 percent indicating substance use disorders. Mayor Lisa Brown reiterated the significance of continued engagement and tailored interventions in tackling homelessness. The ongoing efforts reflect a commitment to improving conditions for vulnerable populations in Spokane County.
