Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's annual Point-in-Time Count shows a second consecutive decline in homelessness, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22. The number of people experiencing sheltered homelessness decreased from 1,578 to 1,189, largely due to improved coordination through a new navigation center-specialized site model. This model has reportedly placed 40 percent of individuals into permanent housing. Conversely, the number of unsheltered individuals rose from 443 to 617, reflecting the new survey methodology that focused on known encampment locations. The City of Spokane plans to expand shelter capacity based on this data, ensuring safe accommodations for those who choose to come indoors.
Mayor Lisa Brown reiterated the significance of consistent engagement and treatment navigation in addressing homelessness. Volunteers of America has expressed full support, emphasizing the importance of identifying community needs through the PIT Count. This strategic approach aims to enhance resources and interventions for the homeless population in Spokane County.
