Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response

Spokane River levels have dropped below 1,000 cubic feet per second, prompting the city to enact Level 2 watering restrictions per a 2022 ordinance. Residents must limit outdoor watering to two days a week and refrain from watering between 10 a. m. and 6 p. m.

Public Works Director Marlene Feist noted that collective efforts can significantly impact the Spokane River and the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer. The Water Wise Spokane program offers free consultations to assist residents and businesses in reducing water use throughout the year. Spokane's summer water usage is four times the national average, making conservation initiatives vital. Since its inception, Water Wise Spokane programs have saved over 344 million gallons of water through education and outreach. The city's strong community participation led to the conservation of 45.

5 million gallons of water in 2024. Implementing these watering restrictions highlights the ongoing need for responsible water management in Spokane.
