Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count shows a second consecutive year of declining homelessness, with sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. Conducted on January 22, this year's count surveyed 1,806 individuals across the county, revealing a slight increase in unsheltered individuals from 443 to 617. The new methodology, which utilized outreach teams to locate unsheltered individuals, aimed to enhance data accuracy and ensure comprehensive coverage. The City of Spokane is focusing on expanding shelter capacity and improving services through the Encampment Resolution Program, which has successfully closed four encampments with an 80% referral success rate to housing. Mayor Lisa Brown stated that consistent engagement and navigation toward treatment are effective strategies.
The count also revealed that 43% of adults surveyed suffer from serious mental illness, indicating a critical need for tailored support. Additionally, 70% of those surveyed had lived in Spokane County prior to becoming homeless. The city continues to adapt its approach based on actual facility utilization to provide safe shelter for those in need.
