Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response
Spokane River levels have fallen below 1,000 cubic feet per second, prompting the city to enforce Level 2 watering restrictions in line with a water conservation ordinance passed in 2022. The restrictions limit outdoor watering to two days per week and establish a ban on watering from 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.
Public Works Director Marlene Feist noted that every small effort contributes to protecting the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer, which serves as the region's drinking water source. The Water Wise Spokane program provides free consultations for residents and businesses to help cut water usage throughout the year. Spokane's summer water consumption is four times the national average, underscoring the urgency of these measures. Additionally, half of the aquifer's recharge comes from the Spokane River, demonstrating the interconnectedness of the local water system. Community engagement in conservation programs led to a significant saving of 45.
5 million gallons in 2024. The city encourages residents to adopt these best practices to ensure sustainable water use.
