Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count shows a second consecutive year of decreasing homelessness, with the number of sheltered individuals falling from 1,578 to 1,189. This year’s count, conducted on January 22, involved 1,806 individuals and adopted a new methodology that sent volunteers to known encampment sites. While the count revealed a rise in unsheltered individuals from 443 to 617, this increase reflects the targeted approach of data collection. Mayor Lisa Brown noted the effectiveness of consistent engagement in navigating individuals toward treatment and transitional housing. The City is focused on expanding shelter capacity and has successfully closed four encampments, with an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals.

Other data points include a decrease in veterans experiencing homelessness and significant rates of mental illness and substance use disorders among surveyed adults. The City’s efforts align with its ongoing investments in the Encampment Resolution Program and navigation center model. As Spokane County continues to address homelessness, the focus remains on ensuring safe indoor options for individuals.
