Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count demonstrated a second consecutive decline in homelessness, with the number of sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. Conducted on January 22, the count surveyed 1,806 individuals across the county and used improved methodologies for enhanced accuracy. Notably, the number of unsheltered individuals rose from 443 to 617, reflecting the new outreach strategy that targeted known encampment locations. The City of Spokane is actively expanding shelter capacity, with significant investments in programs aimed at navigating individuals toward permanent housing solutions. Mayor Lisa Brown highlighted the effectiveness of consistent engagement in addressing homelessness.
Volunteers of America emphasized the importance of identifying individuals in need to tailor support interventions effectively. The count also revealed concerning statistics, including that 43 percent of adults surveyed reported serious mental illness. With an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals after closing four encampments, Spokane's approach continues to evolve.
