Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's annual Point-in-Time Count shows a decline in homelessness for the second consecutive year, with 1,806 individuals counted on January 22, 2025. The number of people in emergency shelters decreased significantly from 1,578 to 1,189, largely due to improved coordination through a new navigation center model. The count revealed a 16% vacancy rate in emergency shelter beds, while unsheltered individuals increased from 443 to 617. This rise is partially attributed to a new methodology that focused on outreach to known encampments. Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized the effectiveness of consistent engagement and support services in reducing homelessness.
Volunteers of America highlighted the need for tailored interventions to assist individuals in achieving stability. Notably, 43% of adults surveyed reported serious mental illness, underscoring the complexity of the issue. The city is committed to expanding shelter options and has successfully closed four encampments since the count.
