Spokane County's annual Point-in-Time Count indicates a second consecutive decline in homelessness, with sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. The count, executed on January 22, surveyed 1,806 individuals utilizing a new methodology that deployed outreach teams to known encampments, enhancing data accuracy. Mayor Lisa Brown stated that ongoing engagement plays a crucial role in guiding individuals toward treatment and stable housing. The count also revealed an increase in unsheltered individuals, rising from 443 to 617, attributed to the new survey approach. Spokane County recorded a 16% vacancy rate in emergency shelter beds, with many vacancies for youth and young adults.

The City of Spokane is committed to expanding shelter capacity, having successfully closed four encampments and achieved an 80% success rate in housing referrals. Other notable data points from the count include 106 veterans and 43% of adults surveyed reporting serious mental illness. The City continues to invest in programs aimed at effectively addressing homelessness and improving individual outcomes.
