Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's annual Point-in-Time Count shows a continued decline in homelessness, with 1,806 individuals surveyed on January 22. Sheltered homelessness decreased from 1,578 to 1,189, a change linked to improved coordination transitioning individuals into permanent housing. Conversely, the unsheltered population increased to 617 due to enhanced survey methods that targeted known encampment locations. The City of Spokane aims to expand shelter capacity based on actual usage, ensuring safe accommodations for those seeking refuge. Mayor Lisa Brown noted the success of consistent engagement in navigating individuals toward treatment and housing stability.

The Encampment Resolution Program has successfully closed four encampments, achieving an 80 percent referral success rate to housing. Other key data points include a decrease in veterans experiencing homelessness and a significant percentage of surveyed adults reporting mental illness and substance use disorders. Volunteers of America emphasizes the importance of identifying individuals in need and tailoring support interventions effectively.
