Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row

Spokane, WALocal News

Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count indicates a continued decline in homelessness, with sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. Conducted on January 22, the count surveyed 1,806 individuals using a new methodology that deployed outreach teams to known unsheltered locations. While the number of sheltered individuals declined, unsheltered individuals increased from 443 to 617, a change linked to the improved data collection approach. Mayor Lisa Brown emphasized that consistent engagement and navigation to treatment and housing are vital in addressing homelessness effectively. The city has successfully closed four encampments since the count, achieving an 80 percent referral success rate to housing.

Additionally, 106 veterans were counted, down from 121 last year, and 43 percent of surveyed adults reported serious mental illness. Spokane's approach focuses on expanding shelter capacity and ensuring safe spaces for individuals seeking help. These efforts align with the city's ongoing investments in homelessness initiatives and specialized shelter models.
