Spokane River levels have dropped below 1,000 cubic feet per second, triggering Level 2 watering restrictions as per the city’s 2022 conservation ordinance. Public Works Director Marlene Feist highlights community efforts in conserving water, stating, "Collective small steps make a big difference. " The new rules restrict outdoor watering to two days a week and ban watering between 10 a. m. and 6 p.

Spokane's summer water usage is four times the national average, underscoring the urgency for conservation measures. Additionally, half of the water replenishing the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer comes from the Spokane River. Participation in conservation programs has led to a significant water savings of 45.
