Annual Snapshot Estimate of Spokane County's Homeless Population Shows Overall Decrease for Second Year in a Row
Spokane County's Point-in-Time Count results reveal a second consecutive year of declining homelessness, with sheltered individuals decreasing from 1,578 to 1,189. Conducted on January 22, 2025, the count surveyed 1,806 individuals and utilized improved outreach methods to enhance data accuracy. Although the number of unsheltered individuals increased from 443 to 617, this shift reflects the more targeted approach of deploying volunteers to known encampments. The City of Spokane has actively closed four encampments, achieving an 80 percent success rate in housing referrals. Additionally, the count highlighted that 43 percent of surveyed adults reported serious mental illness, while 52 percent faced substance use disorders.
Mayor Lisa Brown stated that consistent engagement and navigation to resources are vital for addressing homelessness. The City remains committed to expanding shelter capacity and enhancing support systems. Volunteers of America supports these efforts, emphasizing the importance of identifying individuals in need through the annual count.
