Spokane River Flows Meet Level 2 Drought Response
Spokane River levels have fallen below 1,000 cubic feet per second, prompting the city to implement Level 2 watering restrictions as mandated by a 2022 conservation ordinance. Under these guidelines, residents must limit outdoor watering to two days per week and refrain from watering during peak hours of 10 a. m. to 6 p. m.
Public Works Director Marlene Feist stressed that collective efforts can significantly impact local water resources. The Water Wise Spokane program, which offers free consultations, has saved over 344 million gallons of water since its inception. Spokane's summer water usage is four times the national average, making conservation efforts critical for the region's sustainability. Additionally, half of the water that replenishes the Spokane Valley-Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer originates from the Spokane River. Community involvement led to the conservation of 45.
5 million gallons in 2024 alone. As water levels remain low, continued adherence to these guidelines will be essential for protecting local water sources.
