False report of a shooting causes temporary delay at Riverfront Park during 4th of July celebration

Spokane, WALocal News

On July 4th, shortly after 10 PM, an altercation near the clocktower in Riverfront Park led to chaos as rumors of an active shooter spread among attendees. Officers quickly detained a male associated with the incident, who was found to be unarmed, and no victims came forward to report a crime. As officers continued their investigation, they observed a mass exodus from the park, triggered by misinformation about a shooting. Despite an increased police presence, no evidence of a shooting was found. A reverse 911 alert was sent to inform the community that there was no ongoing threat to public safety, allowing the celebration to continue.

This incident underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in managing misinformation during public events. The Spokane Police Department emphasizes the importance of accurate information in maintaining safety. The community's quick return to the festivities demonstrates resilience in the face of panic.
