Mayor Brown Announces Proposals to Jumpstart New Affordable Housing Development

Spokane, WALocal News

Mayor Lisa Brown unveiled a legislative package aimed at advancing affordable housing in Spokane, consistent with the H. O. M. E. Starts Here Plan.

The proposals focus on reducing obstacles for developers and increasing the availability of housing units. A notable proposal includes renaming the HEART Fund to better reflect its purpose and enhance funding for housing projects. Additionally, a permit fee deferral program would allow developers to postpone significant fees, potentially amounting to $150,000, easing financial burdens during early project phases. The initiative also includes updates to the city's development code to ensure it aligns with current policies and practices. Mayor Brown highlighted the need for more affordable housing units, particularly as Spokane aims to add 22,359 new units by 2046.

The package reflects a community-driven approach, incorporating feedback from local organizations like the Spokane Alliance. These measures represent a significant step towards improving housing equity and stability in the region.
