Mayor Brown Announces Proposals to Jumpstart New Affordable Housing Development

Spokane, WALocal News

Mayor Lisa Brown proposed a legislative package to accelerate affordable housing development in Spokane, aiming to create 22,359 new units by 2046. This initiative aligns with the H. O. M. E.

Starts Here Plan, which addresses housing stability and homelessness. The proposal includes renaming the HEART Fund to enhance funding flexibility and align with state law, allowing for more capital construction awards. Another critical aspect is the establishment of a permit fee deferral program, enabling developers to defer up to $150,000 in fees for income-restricted units. This initiative aims to reduce upfront costs for developers while maintaining responsible growth. Furthermore, the City of Spokane will modernize its development code to improve clarity and efficiency in permitting processes.

The changes will help streamline development procedures and potentially lower costs for new housing projects. Mayor Brown stressed the urgency of increasing affordable housing availability in Spokane.
